Today is the anniversary of the 2003 invasion of Iraq by the United States. Because of this, there has been a decent amount of attention given to the looting of the Iraqi Museum that followed. This event is one of great interest to me, and is probably one of the reasons I am an archaeologist today.
The Salon is running a round table interview with Donny George Youkhanna, Cori Wegener, and Micah Garen by Brian Rose. I must confess that I always find it difficult to hear Donny George’s words on the museum.
Also, Alun over at Archaeoastronomy has an article on what might be happening to these looted artifacts, and where the money is going. While I am not one to throw around the threat of terrorism, artistic treasures have often been tied to the worst types of crime, so it is of little surprise that terrorist organizations might get involved with looted archaeological remains.
